Cue No. 31

"A Free Elf"

DH 31 - A Free Elf 2.mp4

Dissonant strings enter as the question hangs in the air of whether Dobby is okay. He falls to the ground and parts of his theme play in the high strings. A solo horn enters, ending the main statement of his theme. The strings answer, followed by a solo oboe. Choir enters underneath, adding seriousness to the situation.

Dobby speaks his final words as the horn and strings continue. The music moves downwards as he takes his last breath. The strings and choir mourn his death, and support the emotion and shock of Harry, overwhelmed with everything that just happened. Celesta and horn play pieces of Dobby’s theme, and high strings descend in a melancholic and conclusive way.

Over Dobby’s burial, the full string section accompanies the horns (colored by the English horn). His full theme plays once through with harmonies rocking back and fourth as if to invoke a cradle song. Dobby has died a free elf.
