"Opening and Snape's Resolve"

34 - Opening and Snape's Resolve update.mov

The strings crescendo and decrescendo from chord to chord as the finale of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 gets a short reprise. The 3-note motif comes in, moving quickly between keys to accommodate this truncated version of the scene. A big buildup plays under Voldemort raising the Elder Wand to the sky, and in contrast to the cut to black at the end of Part 1, Part 2 begins with a white out that fades into the Warner Brothers Logo.

Over the logo, only the upper strings remain after the orchestra cuts out. The opening of the Deathly Hallows theme plays with its dies irae-like falling motion. The horns then come in with the theme itself. On the second statement, the celesta plays a brief Hedwig's Theme above it, as is traditional over the Warner Brothers Logo. The celesta continues after this, playing its own version of the dies irae-like falling motion, leading us into the final chapter in Harry Potter.

The white fog clears and Hogwarts is revealed. The castle, having not appeared since the end of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, is a different place: Snape is the new headmaster and dementors lurk outside. In the score, only a capella choir remains, invoking the emotions of the last time we saw Snape at Hogwarts after he killed Dumbledore. Once Snape is revealed atop a buttress, the Call of the Prince plays in the violins, recalling the ending of Half-Blood Prince once more. On the shot of Snape's face, a long fade to black is accompanied by the woodwinds, mimicking what the choir sang at the beginning of the scene.

The Deathly Hallows theme plays fully over the opening titles of the film, with distant choir adding to the sense of mystery around these objects that were revealed to us only minutes before the finale of Part 1.

Harry sits at Dobby's grave, holding the mirror shard (much like he was at the beginning of Part 1), and a quick musical choreographed moment draws the eye to a man who briefly appears in it, still unknown to Harry. When the camera cuts to a wide shot of the cliff and Shell Cottage, a solo horn plays Dobby's Theme.

Inside the cottage, Hermione and Ron are sitting at the table, still recovering from the events at Malfoy Manor. The trio theme plays, re-introducing the bonds of friendship that have gotten them this far, though it is now quiet and fatigued.

The final moment of the cue utilizes Luna's motivic material as she walks into frame, observing the beauty of Shell Cottage.
