Cue No. 2

"Dumbledore Appears"

HBPcue2_1.mp4

Harry senses something going on outside, and walks towards the window of the cafe. “Sneaking Around” is given a reprise here, and it continues in the same way as the opening of Sorcerer’s Stone. The reason is made clear after a train whizzes by, revealing Dumbledore standing on the opposite platform. This musical reference is meant to mirror the first time he appeared at the opening of the story, ready to deliver Harry to his Aunt and Uncle. Here he has come to take Harry away from the Muggle world.

Strings play underneath the conversation between the two and become more dissonant when Harry realizes Dumbledore’s hand has been mutilated by dark magic. Quickly dismissed, Dumbledore extends his arm to Harry, asking him to come with him. As soon as they apparate, the music turns into a dizzy and dissonant crescendo of random sounds. The unpleasant experience ends almost as soon as it began, and the orchestra reverts again to a small section from the opening of Sorcerer’s Stone.

Once they begin walking up the street of an unfamiliar neighborhood, low string pizzicato and timpani give quiet pulses to encourage movement. Flutes dance over the upper strings once Harry realizes Dumbledore knows where he’s going, but upon arrival at the residence, they find the door broken in.

The violin sections play in their highest register, and engage in slow counterpoint as the two wizards enter the home. Harry sees a copy of a recent Daily Prophet on the floor with his face on it. Brass take over quietly at the reveal of the headline about the Chosen One. Low strings and harp introduce a different color to the dissonance when Dumbledore realizes blood dripping from the ceiling - but he is suspicious of it. The string section builds four repeated chords from the bottom up, slowly getting louder and louder until Dumbledore finally reaches a very clean looking chair on the other side of the living room. He pokes it with his wand, revealing that it is, in fact, a person in disguise.
