"Occlumency and Christmas Break"

Cue No. 24 - Occlumency and Christmas Break.mp4

Low strings wander as Snape drags a still-confused Harry to the dungeons. Once in Snape’s office, tremolo strings play a variation on the Chamber of Secrets theme. This is followed by the horns stating the Death Eater theme. Snape’s history as a Death Eater is on full display in this scene as he teaches Harry about this newly revealed type of dark magic.

The moment holds and the harp plays anxiously, waiting to see what happens next. A buildup of hesitant woodwinds moves around, and then Snape casts the Legilimens spell to enter Harry’s mind.

Once inside Harry’s head, the orchestra displays a wide variety of aleatoric techniques. The randomness of notes accompanies the unpredictability of memories Snape will see next. In the classroom again, Snape demands that Harry discipline his mind. The camera zooms out of the dungeon and out into the snowy dark. Hedwig’s Theme strings begin playing, but as in Cue No. 18, the Chamber of Secrets theme plays, accenting the darkness that has overcome the magical world once again.

The transition leads us to Grimmauld Place. Double Trouble plays quickly in the harp, and a warm, full version of Harry’s Wondrous World plays as the Weasleys celebrate Christmas. This section is calmly orchestrated, and it is another one of the last moments in the film to be relaxed and loving. A pause occurs when Sirius reaches the doorframe. The Family theme enters, showing that Harry now has one in Sirius and the Weasleys. They salute him for saving Mr. Weasley. Sirius looks at Harry with love, and A Window to the Past plays.
