"The Silver Doe"

DH 23 - The Silver Doe 2.mp4

Very high violins tremolo, accompanied by a bell tree, complementing the icy silence of the Forest of Dean. After hours in the cold, Harry spots something in the distance - a light. Choir enters the eerie stillness of the texture, and the low strings come in at the bottom of the orchestra's range. A solo flute enters curiously. Harry begins walking towards what he presumes to be a Patronus.

Falling motifs in the clarinets and oboe descend as Harry makes his way down to the frozen pond where the silver doe has led him. The high violins enter again, and a bell toll is played between the solo flute and harp. Low strings come back in as well, and a percussive magical flourish follows the Patronus through the ice and down into the water underneath.

At the moment Harry realizes the sword of Godric Gryffindor is at the bottom of the pond, a reprise of Hedwig's Theme from the mirror scene in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001) is heard. This is to re-emphasize the mysteriousness of the magical world that Harry felt all those years back, returning to mystify him once again. Harry cracks the ice and a clarinet and harp duo play a familiar motivic device that is used to pace thinking within a scene. The strings hold and a hesitant flute and clarinet return before Harry takes the plunge into the icy water.

Only the basses are heard once Harry is submerged, playing the lowest note on their instrument, a C, then a tritone above it, waiting for something to happen. The moment Harry touches the sword, the Horcrux locket around his neck suddenly begins choking him. The entire orchestra slowly builds and moves upward in pitch. Orchestration includes muted horns, strings playing Bartok pizzicato, col legno, trilling violently, flutes building aleatorically, and percussion.

The music finally gives way when a silhouette appears above the ice. The horns play unmuted and trumpets join them. Choir enters as the figure jumps into the water to rescue Harry and to grab the sword. Harry is dragged out of the pond, freezing, and grabs his glasses. He looks up to see Ron come into focus - his best friend came back to rescue him. Ron's Theme plays in both a heroic and nostalgic way, celebrating their reunion.
