"The Third Task"

Cue No. 32 - The Third Task.mp4

The Triwizard theme plays as Dumbledore brings the four champions together for a word of advice before the task begins. The theme turns ominous quickly as he talks about the dangers within the maze. A big fanfare follows as the crowd cheers and the champions are ready to begin the Third Task. At the end of the fanfare, a Mickey-Moused moment of Filch firing the canon serves as a callback to his consistency of screwing up his one job.

The violins play an ostinato familiar to Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), and an overlay of the plotting motif occurs as the camera turns back to Mad-Eye Moody. He’s helping Harry start off on good footing, so this serves as positive plotting...or does it? Once the maze closes and Harry is inside with no turning back, a motif begins in the strings that resembles the Chamber of Secrets 2 theme. This is morphed to serve as the maze motif, as it crescendos to accompany the camera moving up, revealing the true enormity of the endless hedges. The motif calms down and freezes as Harry stands still, listening. A shot from above the maze moves to the tune of the Dark Forest, emphasizing how the quiet can be as threatening as a dragon. Cedric wanders and the music spikes as the hedges close in on him. The movement does not stop until the camera cuts away to a different part of the maze. Victor Krum, along with his motif, is walking with purpose towards something. Harry hears a noise and turns quickly. The music freezes in fear as Krum looks from behind a hedge.

Fleur is running, anxious, and accompanied by a worried Beauxbatons theme. A moving bassline creates the unsettling texture suggesting that nothing is safe now. She stands and looks down a long row, waiting in the eerie stillness. The string section quickly sneaks up behind her as something or someone attacks. Harry hears the scream and turns quickly. Krum is revealed to have attacked Fleur, and the maze motif returns, suggesting that he is in some sort of alliance with the tall, threatening bushes.

Harry runs to find Fleur, anxious music accompanying him. There is a musical flourish as he comes up on a hedge and observes what has happened. Krum appears and turns around towards Harry. The maze theme officially transforms into the Chamber of Secrets theme as he is startled, solidifying that something bigger is once again at play here. Harry wanders through the maze, now aware that this is most likely another plot to eliminate him. The Chamber motif reaches the top of its phrase as Harry shoots sparks into the sky, alerting Hogwarts that Fleur is in danger.

The camera pans down as strings pick up speed and begin swirling around with the wind. The bushes close on Harry and he runs for it. At a clearing, he sees the Triwizard cup, with the Tournament theme playing in the background. Strings still swirling, he runs for it. Timpani thuds interrupt as he runs across both Cedric and Krum’s paths. They are engaged in a duel. Orchestral flourishes fly with their spells at each other until Cedric defeats Krum.

Harry and Cedric both run for the cup. The maze motif upgrades from triplets to even more insistent 16th notes. Cedric trips, and the music ascends to high anxiety and horror at his potential defeat. The Family theme bursts in as Harry slowly turns around, realizing he has a choice between saving his friend, or winning the tournament. Hedwig’s Theme plays heroically as he decides to save Cedric. Once the danger has passed, Cedric thanks Harry, his theme playing underneath the conversation. The maze theme returns, reminding them that this is not over yet. They go for the cup together as the strings in unison, accompanied by timpani, accompany their last run for the Triwizard Cup. Tension builds, and as they both decide to grab the cup together, the loud, sparkling music from when they grabbed the portkey at the beginning of the film, returns. They’ve landed somewhere new, somewhere far away from Hogwarts, somewhere evil.
