"Sirius Discussion"

Cue No. 14 - Sirius Discussion.mp4

Sirius appears in the fireplace of the Gryffindor common room. Ominous strings circle around fragments of the octatonic scale, showing the uncertainty in this new mystery unfolding at Hogwarts. When the topic of Death Eaters enters the discussion, their theme takes over. As the plot thickens and the mystery grows, there is a statement of two chords in the choir which are immediately repeated an octave down. This echoes “Meeting Tom Riddle” from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002). This is the first time since Harry’s second year that a dark mystery plagues Hogwarts, so bringing these chords back felt appropriate. Pettigrew is mentioned, and the music continues with his motif before a noise interrupts the discussion.

Descending octatonic material returns, and a string tremolo builds to the reveal of Ron coming down the stairs into the common room. His theme gets a new variation that is more tired and strained. Once he leaves, Harry looks back and sees that Sirius has gone. A Window to the Past plays, but ends with an unusual tonality, showing that this journey is not yet over. The music then settles back comfortably as Harry sits by the lake, and Neville speaks about plants.
