SECONDARY 4

Hi, I am Xanvier from class 4A1. I have been a Student Councillor since Secondary 1. In Secondary 3, I subeaquently became one of the six EXCOs in the Student Council, the Head of Outreach.

When I first entered the school, I was welcomed by the seniors and when I looked at the Orientation Group Leaders (OGLs), they inspired me to become one as well.

When it was time to choose the CCA that we wanted to go to, I was unsure about what CCA should I choose as I was still new to the environment. However, with the advice of my sister, who was one of the OGLs and seniors in our school, the decision to choose Student Council as my CCA became an obvious choice.

When I first started Student Council, I remembered that I was very quiet and would only answer questions when my CCA teachers, SCTAs or seniors asked me as I was afraid that my ideas were not good enough. However, in Secondary 2 I told myself that I have to step out of my comfort zone as I was the "senior" now and there are juniors (Secondary 1) were looking up to us and this was the time I started to step out of my comfort zone.

The first time I was an IC was Secondary 2, I was quite nervous as I was afraid that I could not do well and had to trouble my CCA friend, which was the other IC. There were many discussions among the two of us and our SCTAs, and we managed to get things done. After finishing this project, I was quite happy as it was my first time being an IC, and slowly, I have tried to be the IC for other things when my seniors asked me to do.

As the Head Of Outreach and I managed to run my EXCO Campaign which was campaigning for a common school jacket successfully. Although I had some difficulties with the design of the school jackets, thankfully I had my Sec 4 seniors and Ms Amanda, one of the SCTAs, to help me to go through this entire process and made the School Jacket Project successful. During the whole year of 2022, the six of us have done quite a number of projects together such as National Day Nanyang Collaboration 2022 and  CCA camp, and we have also done some projects among our own committee. For example, I had facilitated the Principal Dialogue and Student Conversation in the Outreach committee.

Now, I have stepped down from Student Council as I'm having National Exams this year. However, all of my EXCO members have gone back during CCA time to visit the Student Council and we even helped out during this year's Student Leadership Investiture.

There were many invaluable lessons that I learned during these four years as a councillor. Firstly, I learnt the importance of stepping out of our comfort zone and becoming role models for the other JYians. By doing so, we inspire and encourage others to push their boundaries and achieve greatness. As an EXCO member, I understood the significance of effective communication and collaboration. Working together as a team and sharing the workload not only lightens the burden but also fosters a sense of unity and camaraderie among us. We all have our individual responsibilities, and it is crucial not to burden others with additional work, but rather support and uplift one another in our respective roles.

These valuable lessons have left a lasting impact on me and have prepared me to face the future with optimism and confidence. I have gained the courage to embrace challenges, knowing that stepping out of my comfort zone leads to personal growth and development. Being a role model for others has shown me the power of leading by example and inspiring positive change in those around me.

Moreover, my experience working closely with fellow councillors and EXCO members has taught me the significance of teamwork and effective communication. Together, we accomplished remarkable projects, such as the National Day Nanyang Collaboration and the CCA camp, showcasing the power of collaboration and the fulfillment that comes with achieving shared goals.

As I look ahead to new endeavors, I am filled with optimism and excitement. I am confident in my abilities to take on challenges, contribute positively to my community, and continue learning and growing as an individual. The lessons I learned during my time as a councillor have instilled in me a sense of purpose and a drive to make a difference in the lives of others.

With the support of the invaluable experiences and skills gained as a councillor, I am ready to embrace the future with an optimistic outlook and a determination to create a positive impact in every aspect of my life. The lessons learned will serve as a guiding light, reminding me to remain open-minded, proactive, and always eager to explore new possibilities.

As I embark on new journeys and opportunities, I carry with me the spirit of stepping out of my comfort zone, leading with positivity, and fostering a collaborative environment. I am grateful for the transformative journey as a councillor and am eager to continue making a difference in the world around me.

Remember, it is through our willingness to grow and learn that we can shape a brighter and more promising future for ourselves and those we touch along the way.
