Secondary 2

My name is Soo Hwee and I’m from Juying Secondary school.

My primary school days had passed me by like a flash compared to Secondary life now. Not only are there more subjects, but there are also more programmes and events. Now, if you are anything like me, public speaking isn’t your cup of tea - or Starbucks coffee, whichever you prefer. So, you can imagine my shock when I heard I had to do a Public Speaking workshop during
AP.

AP is short for Achievers Programme and is basically a great way to explore your interests. From Eco-sustainability to coding you learn things hands-on and trips to the Science Discovery Centre.

In one of our AP sessions, we had mini TED-talk or toastmasters training. By the end of the workshop we had to write and present a speech. They do not throw you face-first into the speech though, we had about a month to prepare and learn all about how to be confident in your speaking skills and to write a script. The skills I learnt have stuck with me well beyond the end of the workshop and I actually found enjoyment in public speaking! Just getting to perform that final speech you worked so hard on was really rewarding for me that I went on to sign up for another public speaking contest here in Juying- the Orator’s trophy. Overall, one big reason to join Juying is the opportunities that allow you to try something new and improve on something you are already passionate about. It does not have to be public speaking either because AP and Orator’s Trophy are only two of many programmes Juying Secondary has to offer.

Speaking of a catalogue of options, the facilities and utilities here are just as vast! I’ll keep it short so stay with me. A pool table, Xbox, PS5 and more in our Chillax Room, your own personal locker to store your books, a counselling room if you need someone to talk to for support, a huge soccer field and indoor sports hall. Not only do they help you destress but they build the sense of connection you have with your peers so that’s another reason why you should consider choosing Juying Secondary.

Secondary school life is going to be the next stage of your life. That is why it is important that you pick a school which you like and think you can do your best in. It is going to make those 4-5 years studying and making good friends a whole lot easier. So, if my talk has inspired you, I encourage you to take the first step and consider choosing Juying Secondary!
