Why I Chose Juying Secondary?
There are a myriad of reasons as to why I chose Juying Secondary School to be my second home for four years. One thing that stood out the most when I first heard about Juying is how many opportunities are offered to their students, who are also known as JYians. As a fresh graduate from Primary School, it was very eye-opening and fascinating to see the various unique experiences that JYians get to enjoy. From enriching camps like LEAD Camp to VIA Trips for International Experience, all these opportunities made me gravitate towards Juying. Beyond that, when I attended the Open House back in 2017, I was also welcomed by amiable and enthusiastic teachers and students. Another reason that enticed me to choose Juying to further my education is the amenities and facilities that Juying had. The school features a pop out glass dance studio and an entertainment room for students called the Chillax Room. These features appealed to me and made Juying feel like an all-rounded school.
CCA
Later on when I got posted to Juying Secondary School, I got nominated to be a trainee councillor and I was eventually inducted as an official councillor. Student Council is a safe environment where student leaders get to explore and step out of their comfort zone to challenge their personal limits. This is why my formative years in secondary school were shaped by Student Council. The familial environment nurtured me to become the confident and matured person that I am today. Other than the learning environment that Student Council provides, we have many flagship events that serve as an integral part of cultivating leaders. For instance, the annual Teachers’ Day Celebration is an event that is planned from start to finish by the councillors. The experience of generating ideas and planning the flow of events for a school-wide event cultivates the value of teamwork and trains us to think critically. Throughout my first two years in Student Council, I learnt a great deal and my leadership potential also increased. My leadership journey in Juying culminated with me being appointed as the President of Student Council.
My Teachers (Character Building)
While Student Council attributed to my character development, the teacher advisers also played a major role in my growth as an individual. One teacher that goes the extra mile to support the councillors emotionally would be Ms Maybellina Lim. She was the teacher in-charge for my cohort of councillors and she has helped me overcome many challenges by helping me to realise what is important and how I should approach setbacks in life. She makes the conscious effort to check in with her students and many of them would certainly share the same sentiment of her being a supportive teacher.
My Teachers (Academic Pursuits)
Besides having teachers who support my character development, the teachers in Juying Secondary School also assist us in terms of our studies. One teacher that has really aided me to attain exemplary results would be my upper secondary form teacher, Ms Yeo Yee Teng. She was also my Mathematics and Additional Mathematics from Secondary 3 to 4. I was not particularly adept at Mathematics in my lower secondary years and I barely made the cut to take Additional Mathematics but under the guidance of Ms Yeo, I managed to attain high distinctions for both subjects.
