When I first heard about Juying Secondary School, I was drawn to its warm and supportive environment, as well as its special programmes like PASSION, which encourages students to discover their interests and grow beyond the classroom. Juying stood out to me because it wasn’t just focused on academic results—it cared about our all-round development and character. I knew it would be a place where I could learn, grow, and feel supported.
One teacher who made a real difference in my journey is Mr Ow, who taught me Science in lower secondary and now teaches me Physics. From the start, Mr Ow made lessons fun and easy to understand. He explained difficult concepts in simple ways, often using real-life examples that helped us remember them. What I appreciated most was his patience. Even if I didn’t understand something right away, he would calmly explain it again and never made me feel bad for asking questions. Because of his support and teaching style, I slowly gained confidence in Science and even started to enjoy it.
Juying also gave me many meaningful experiences outside the classroom, especially through Values in Action (VIA). One of the most impactful was the trip to Bintan, where we engaged in community work to help the locals. We helped build safe water gardens and interacted with the villagers. It opened my eyes to how fortunate we are, and it taught me the value of giving back. That trip made me more grateful, empathetic, and motivated to help others whenever I can.
My CCA, the National Civil Defence Cadet Corps (NCDCC), also played a big role in shaping who I am today. Through NCDCC, I learned life-saving skills like CPR and fire safety, and more importantly, I developed discipline, responsibility, and teamwork. I had opportunities to take part in drills, school events, and even lead others. These experiences helped me become more confident, calm under pressure, and a better team player.
Looking back, I’ve changed a lot since joining Juying. I used to be quite shy and unsure of myself. But through the supportive school environment, the encouragement from teachers like Mr Ow, and the challenges I took on through VIA and my CCA, I’ve become more confident, resilient, and ready to face the future. Juying gave me the space to grow at my own pace and helped me realise what I’m capable of.
