VANESSA TEO

Secondary 4

Top GCE N(A)-level student Class of 2020

I chose Juying Secondary School as my first choice because of the Learning for Life Programme (LLP) that JYSS offered which was about performing arts; be it singing, dancing or playing musical instruments. Through this programme, I learnt more about performing and I started to realised that I actually liked it.

Another thing that attracted my attention was the leadership opportunities provided by the school.

At JYSS, I was in 2 Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) - Student Council and Show Choir. In Student Council, we helped to convey feedback from the JYians to the school leaders and helped to think of solutions to their feedback.

We also planned activities for the school to enjoy, such as the National Day Observance Ceremony, Teachers' Day and Sports Carnival. Through organising these activities, I have learnt a lot. For example, being adaptable to changes and to resolve unexpected challenges.

I am also the Vice-Chairperson of Show Choir. In Show Choir, we sing, dance and act which is like performing for a musical. Being the vice-chairperson, holds many responsibilities such as disciplining and take care of my CCA members in choir. Through having these responsibilities, I have learnt to be more patient and understanding towards people around me.

In Secondary 3, I was very fortunate to be selected to go to Australia for an exchange programme because only 30 students from all three streams could be selected. I attended classes at 2 high schools and visited one of the universities. I had lessons with the local students there and learnt about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
