I am Wen Hui from Juying Secondary School. I was a former student from Jurong Primary. I was from 6 Gracious 2017. I will be sharing reasons why you should choose Juying as your choice secondary school.
Firstly, we have our Learning for Life Programme, also known as LLP, which focuses on aesthetics. Over the course of one year we learnt to strum the Ukulele and get to choose either Hip Hop or Guzheng. Through the course, we learnt the basics on how to play the instrument or dance. We learnt to be resilient, to go through the course although it can be hard at first. It is also very enjoyable being one of the lighter lessons thus a small break from studying. Responsibility is also drilled in. We have to be responsible for our own practice and remembering of skills required for the assessment. Although not everyone may choose to continue or have a career in aesthetics, the values we learn will certainly help in other aspects of our life.
Secondly, we also have our Applied Learning Programme, known as ALP. Our school focuses on Public Speaking, to prepare us for our post-secondary education and the presentations we have to do in many situations. Each student will present a one to two minute speech on the given topic during their allocated recess session. Before the session, your scripts will be vetted by your English teacher, and feedback and help will be given as well. This really helps to boost our confidence and help us to be effective speakers. Not everyone can speak well. Thus, I am grateful that Juying offers this programme as it will help me when I step into JC, polytechnic and even the working world.
For students who are interested in public speaking and would like more than the mandatory sessions, we have our ALP Talent Development Programme. We have more sessions on public speaking, in more detail. The programme includes how to deliver impromptu speeches, improvisation and so on. After the first part, students will be assessed, as well as feedback from other teachers will be taken. Students struggling in their normal studies will not be allowed to continue the talent development programme, as our studies are the priority. Confirmed students will then take part in the next programme.
Partnering with Gardens by the Bay, we will take part in their ASK-ME Programme, whereby student volunteers will bring visitors around the specific small route. It hones our public speaking skills and ability to improvise as we do not know what will happen and what they will ask. Personally, my own public speaking has improved after being part of these programmes. Don’t you think so?
If speaking in front of a large audience is not what you’re comfortable with. I am sure Juying will expose you to many activities that will maximise your potential based on your talents and interests. What are you waiting for? Choose Juying Secondary as your first choice!
