When my son, Aurelius, was preparing to enter Secondary School in 2024, I found myself, like many other parents, searching for a school that would truly support his unique growth. As my third child, Aurelius had different needs compared to his older siblings. He required a learning environment that valued not just academic achievement but also celebrated the other facets of a student’s character and potential.
We attended numerous open houses, each one offering something different. But when I introduced Juying Secondary School (JYSS) to him, something clicked. Aurelius made the decision himself, and it turned out to be the best choice.
Since joining JYSS, I’ve seen a remarkable transformation in him. He has become more motivated, more proactive, and has taken ownership of his learning journey in ways I hadn’t seen before. One example that speaks volumes was during his early days in school: he repeatedly forgot to complete homework assignments. In many schools, this would have prompted an immediate call to the parents. But at JYSS, the approach was very different. Instead of simply informing me, the teachers placed Aurelius in a homework supervision programme—one that encouraged responsibility and helped him learn the consequences of his actions. This gentle but firm support taught him to take charge of his commitments.
Today, he’s a child who never leaves an assignment undone. On the rare occasions when he forgets something, he reacts with a kind of urgency and accountability that surprises me—in a good way. That mindset, that shift in character, was nurtured in JYSS.
There’s a quote that was shared during a parent engagement session in the first week of school, and it has stayed with me ever since:
“Children are not things to be moulded, but are people to be unfolded.”
At JYSS, I’ve seen first-hand how this belief is not just spoken but lived by the teachers and leaders of the school.
As a parent, I couldn’t be more grateful for how JYSS has embraced my child, guided him with wisdom and compassion, and helped him unfold into the person he was always meant to be.
