JUYING SECONDARY SCHOOL

SECONDARY 4

I had joined Juying Secondary School because my cousin was from the school and she had managed to graduate with an 'O' level certificate, even though she was from the NA stream. So if she can do it, I believe I can too, and my journey in Juying has been a very eventful one. There have been many opportunities provided for us.

In secondary 1, we had the orientation camp. Our secondary 4 seniors were the ones helping to conduct the activities for the camp. During the camp, we tried out various CCAs. I joined badminton because the team was friendly, well trained and disciplined. We also had many ice-breaker games to get to know our classmates. I can still remember all the boisterous cheering that we did every time before eating. On the last night of the camp, we had a campfire performance, in which we took turns to dance as a class for the whole cohort.

We went to the Labrador adventure camp in secondary 2, where I managed to accomplish some personal goals of mine. For instance, one of them was to do zip-lining. I was really afraid of height and it took me about 10 minutes to have the courage to even step off the plank. My friends were cheering me on continuously, and I would not have been able to do it without their support.

Secondary 3 for me was quite intense, but I enjoyed it the most. Not only did we have OBS during the September holidays, we also had an overseas VIA/TIE trip to Bintan in November. I learnt a lot in OBS. We did a 10km trekking whilst carrying a heavy bag, as well as 15km of kayaking. All the persevering paid off and eventually, everyone lost weight. We were being grouped randomly with other students from Hillgrove Secondary, which forced us to step out of our comfort zone and make new friends. For the VIA/TIE trip, we collected and donated many canned food to an orphanage in Bintan. The interactions we had, dancing with the orphans, were unforgettable. It was the most fun I had in a while, after my end-of-year examinations.

In Secondary 4, I did my VIA at an old folks home. We did research on the internet about how recycling can be applied to keep the elderly companied and came up with activities such as 'bingo' and 'folding of boxes' for the elderly to enjoy. We collected cardboards and bottle caps all around the school and managed to find many recyclable items. We painted the cardboards to make them look more presentable. It took us a lot of work as we had to write numbers on both the cardboards and the bottle caps. The cardboards were then used as our bingo boards. The bottle caps were used for the calling of numbers for our bingo game. The winner would eventually receive a prize from us. After having all the activities carried out, we had extra time with the seniors and danced our very own JYian dance. It was very memorable because the elderly were clapping along to the song and the smiles on their face gave me huge satisfaction. I was proud of what my class had accomplished.
