Secondary 3

My most memorable experience in Juying Secondary School (JYSS) was when I was given a chance to visit another country to perform my Values-In-Action (VIA) project. I was able to learn many values such as resilience and empathy and experience what the less fortunate have gone through. Since not many schools offer students the chance to go to other countries to experience what the locals there are going through, I am extremely grateful for this chance to experience this and help improve the lives of the locals.

In addition, JYSS has a conducive learning environment for me to learn. They have many great facilities such as MOVE room which has many iPads and iMacs; 4 computer labs and an after-school relaxation room called The Chillax Room. The school also provides opportunities for the students to learn musical instruments such as the Ukulele and Guzheng. Also, learning hip hop through Learning-For Life Programme (LLP).

As for co-curricular activtiy (CCA), I am in Symphonic Band and Student Council. Over the past 3 years, I have been taught lessons in resilience, grit, and courage and learnt leadership skills in Student Council. During the annual Council Camp last year, we were given the opportunity to experience the Escape Room and Laser Tag which allowed us to bond well as a CCA. I have also been taught to play trumpet,, and gained teamwork as we had to work together to put up a good performance in my other CCA, Symphonic Band.

I also had an opportunity to attend Hwa Chong’s Boarding School IBP International Boarding Programme (IBP). This programme was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and only 6 people were chosen out of the hundreds in our cohort. This programme has trained me to be more independent as I lived in the premises of the Boarding School. I learnt how to adapt to the new environment and schedule as I was near yet so far from home. However, this has allowed me to become closer to my fellow cohort mates whom luckily are my current classmates so we went to and fro from the Boarding School every day.

I also had the chance to obtain a scholarship as I chose JYSS as my first choice of secondary school and was in the top 30% of the cohort.

This scholarship helped me as it has paid for some of my programmes in school and also a small amount of my VIA trip.

All in all, Juying Secondary has provided me many opportunities to develop my potential.
