Secondary 2

Juying Secondary School has given me many experiences that have changed me and choosing this school was one of the best decisions I have ever made. The reason why I chose this school is the fact that the teachers are very nice and caring and this is something that is very important to me in choosing a school.

One of the best experiences so far is being in my PASSION Module. I was in the Health Passion Module and I had the best time there. We went on learning journeys to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) and the Singapore Mental Health Film Festival. The learning journey was an eye-opening experience for me. I visited the different facilities and I got to see the warmth and care the doctors and nurses have for their patients. The learning journey actually cleared up some stereotypes and questions I had about mental institutions and mental health in general. That trip alone inspired me and it actually made me interested in being a psychologist. All of these programmes were done by Ms Shynn and I appreciate the effort she had put in for the module. Other than the learning journeys, she also invited mental health professionals to talk to us and planned interesting lessons for us. She also told us stories about her own experience with close friends and ex-students suffering from mental illnesses. I can see the passion she has for this module and the amount of work and effort that she had put in was truly admirable.

My favourite teacher is Ms Lau Jia Yun, who is my form teacher since secondary one. She is one of the most hardworking, caring and humble teacher I have ever met. She has helped me through one of the toughest times of my life. I had suspected that I had anxiety disorder and I decided to consult her for help. She was very understanding and informed my parents and the school counsellor. I felt awkward about talking to my parents about my issues but Ms Lau was there for me and she helped me to communicate with my parents. She was the bridge between me and my parents during that period of time. If it was not for her, my state of mental health would not have improved and I might not even be here today. Another thing that stands out about her is her hardworking attitude. She always tries her best to improve her lessons and teaching tactics by asking her students for feedback and improving on them. She constantly makes the effort to connect with her students and to get to know us better. This is something I truly admire about her and I truly look up to her.

I am in the Juying Symphonic Band and I do not regret joining this Co-Curricular Activity (CCA). In the one year that I have been in Band, I have learnt many values from many invaluable lessons, be it from the annual band camp or the training sessions, when we were scolded by our instructors and teachers. I have learnt to be more responsible and proactive.

I do not regret choosing Juying Secondary School as my first choice and I am grateful to all the staff and the friends whom I have made.
