Juying Secondary School is a place for me to grow and discover new things. It has provided me with a lot of different platforms and programmes to develop my oracy skills as well as confidence. One of these platforms is the Speakers’ Corner. It is an area for me where I can step out of my comfort zone and speak in front of the school on the different topics that interest me. I remember that one of the topics that I spoke about was the Value-In-Action (VIA) that I had done and it was really a fruitful experience to be able to stand in front of my schoolmates to share my experience.
Another unique programme that I have gone through in Juying is the Public Speaking workshop. Juying had specially gotten external instructors to teach us about public speaking. I think that this was really a useful programme as we were given opportunities to learn to present in front of a crowd. I feel that this is a very important skill which we would be able to use in our future workplace. It could even help us better communicate and socialise with others on a daily basis. Opportunities like being an emcee during school celebrations were also given to students and I vividly remember the experience I had, while being an emcee for the Chinese New Year celebration this year. I had the opportunity, together with three other students, to lead the celebration as an emcee. This helped build my confidence.
Juying also organises CCA camps at the end of each year and being a member of Juying’s Show Choir, I really enjoyed this event that was planned out for the different CCAs to be able to bond with their respective members and make more friends. During the camp, activities like running man and bubble ball soccer were organised and we even went on a trip to watch a musical. I believe that such camps give students a chance to take a break from academics and spend time with their friends in a safe environment under the teachers’ care.
