John 18:28-40
Jesus Came to Earth to Testify to Truth
28 Then the Jewish leaders took Jesus from Caiaphas to the palace of the Roman governor. By now it was early morning, and to avoid ceremonial uncleanness they did not enter the palace, because they wanted to be able to eat the Passover. 29 So Pilate came out to them and asked, “What charges are you bringing against this man?”
30 “If he were not a criminal,” they replied, “we would not have handed him over to you.”
31 Pilate said, “Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law.”
“But we have no right to execute anyone,” they objected. 32 This took place to fulfill what Jesus had said about the kind of death he was going to die.
33 Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
34 “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?”
35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “Your own people and chief priests handed you over to me. What is it you have done?”
36 Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place.”
37 “You are a king, then!” said Pilate.
Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”
38 “What is truth?” retorted Pilate. With this he went out again to the Jews gathered there and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him. 39 But it is your custom for me to release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
40 They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.
Jesus is the Only Man, if it fair to call Him a Man, that He is the Truth...So Truth is a Person...Jesus is that Person, the Person of Truth...He said: He is the Truth the Life, and the Way...
St. John, a Disciple of Jesus, was with Him for three years and learned much about the Truth, and the importance of speaking the Truth, and about the One who called Himself the Truth and is Absolute Truth...
These are some of the things St. John said about Truth, and that he learned from His Master Jesus: Jesus said to him, “I AM the way, and the truth, and the life...No one comes to the Father except through Me...And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His Glory, Glory as of the Only Son from the Father, full of Grace and Truth...And knowing Jesus you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free...God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and Truth...Sanctify the Disciples of Jesus in the Truth; God's Word is Truth...So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you abide in My Word, you are truly My disciples, and you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free.”...And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is True; and we are in Him who is True, in His Son Jesus Christ...He is the true God and Eternal Life...
For the law was given through Moses; Grace and Truth came through Jesus Christ...Pilate, when Jesus was arrested said to Him, “So you are a King?”... Jesus answered, “You say that I AM a King...For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the Truth...Everyone who is of the Truth listens to My voice.”...Pilate said to Him, “What is Truth?”...After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in Him...
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the Truth of Jesus is not in us...Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in Truth...I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the Truth...
Jesus said to the unbelieving Jews, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I have come here from God...I have not come on My Own; God sent Me...Why is My language not clear to you?... Because you are unable to hear what I say...You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires...He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the Truth, because there is no Truth in him...When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies...If we say we have fellowship with Him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the Truth...
St. John wrote these things He was taught by Jesus about the Holy Spirit: When the Spirit of Truth comes, He will guide you into all the Truth, for He will not speak on His Own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come...Nevertheless, I tell you the Truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you...But if I go, I will send Him to you...“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth, who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness about Me...But the anointing that you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you...But as His anointing teaches you about everything, and is True, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in Him...Even the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him...You know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you...For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your Truth, as indeed you are walking in the Truth...
