John 18:19-21
The High Priest Questions Jesus
19Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
20"I have spoken openly to the world," Jesus replied. "I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret. 21Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said."
When we read about Jesus, we read how unique He is...We read that He is divine and holy...We learn a lot of different things about Him...We learn, even under great duress, He is calm, meek, and humble...But also we learn something about ourselves in reading about Him...
Jesus calmly tells the High Priest that when He spoke (and taught), He spoke openly to our world...He hid nothing in secret...His message is not a hidden message...He tells the High Priest to go and ask those who heard Him speak and teach...Surely they know what He said...Jesus is telling when He spoke other people listened to Him, and they knew and believed in what He was saying...
The four gospels are the words and teachings of Jesus...The four written gospels are like His biography...When we read His account in the four gospels, Jesus is in a sense is telling us that we have heard Him and listened to His teachings...We know what He said after we have read the gospels...Jesus taught His Twelve disciples and other believers that we too are responsible...We are responsible for what we hear, what we have read in the Bible, and what we tell others about Him, and what we think of Him...
The current disciples of today are the current believers in Jesus...Like the High Priest, today there are non-believers...The nonbeliever will debate the Truth, not believe in Him, and will not believe in miracles...But Jesus appeals to those who have heard Him and believe in Him...There is an expectation for believers to continue to pass on His teachings...The current children (of this world) are (always) the last generation of Christians and potential Christians...
