With new international laws and institutions, growing urbanism, and expanding industry, the local laws and feudal courts of the past are swiftly retiring in favor of large organized police forces, and a more centralized court system to establish precedent and to adjudicate on new or unusual cases. New technologies and methods aid the police as well. With telegram communication, semaphore towers, and local precincts, news of criminal activities travels fast, and police respond more swiftly. Photography allows for investigators to archive crime scenes and keep accurate likeness of suspects. Electricity has even created long-lasting lanterns to illuminate the dark alleys where criminals might lurk.
Beyond normal criminal acts is the concern of unlicensed magic. Since Voidwatch began to investigate and regulate the use of dangerous magics, magic-users are expected to be licensed by an institution of magic to ensure propriety. Such institutions include Magic Academies, Bard Colleges, and Temples. To help combat renegade magic-users, Voidwatch employs a vast number of their operatives to work with local police to find and arrest such dangerous individuals.
