The Cortex Discernants are a group of very old Daeryds who reside in the Cortex temple. The harsh environment has scoured away their skin, leaving their eerie skeletal bodies. The Discernants are still the wisest and most revered daeryds, who have taken the careful task of evaluating which new memories are to be added to the Cortex, and which are to be omitted. They are also responsible for guarding the Cortex and finding a ways to safeguard the information from disaster.
In recent years, a number of contending philosophies have arisen among daeryds.
Daeryds who believe that all information, however seemingly irrelevant, harmful, or even totally untrue, is valuable to the collective intelligence of the Cortex. Thus any omission or alteration to information added is sacrilegious. It is instead the responsibility of the individual to verify and evaluate information shared through the Cortex. Singularity, as these daeryds believe, is an aspirational principle that is approached through open and uncensored information, but can never be truly achieved.
These daeryds support the existence of the Discernants, holding instead that Singularity can only be reached if all information in the Cortex is true and important. They believe instead that it is of utmost importants to verify and clarify everything, especially as newer generations of daeryd are mixing far more with devious and immoral individuals when traveling abroad. Furthermore, daeryds who believe that accuracy is most important have also accused their opponents of being lazy and hasty in their eagerness to collect information, and that such recklessness is the most damaging of all to daeryd society.
