Dwarves worship their ancestors, and trace their lineage back to legendary dwarves of history whose exploits are recorded. While these dwarven ancestors are usually verifiable, and their behaviors and qualities rarely supernatural, they are still treated with reverence and ideal in much the way that other religions would treat their gods. Dwarves believe they are descendent of The Great Dwarf. Most dwarves, to preserve their ancestry, will have the bodies of their deceased petrified and erected as statues or reliefs, or otherwise entombed.
The examples of venerated ancestors listed here are those of dwarven history. However, it is worth noting that the practice of worshipping ancestors has long been a tradition in many cultures such as ancient orcs fashioning jewelry from their tribe's bones, halflings creating small shrines to honored family, humans marking graves with ceremonial stone monuments, and elves planting trees whose growth are said to be guided by the spirits of their people. It is a nearly universal belief that by honoring the dead, one may be gifted with good favor, and as evidenced by extraordinary magic, many are.
