Sculptural Sustained Investigation Reflection

The Face Of Imperfections

Inquiry Question: How does modern society's beauty standards affect how we view ourselves?

I chose this inquiry to focus on because I've always thought it was very interesting how we can portray and view ourselves based on modern day beauty standards. Even when we are beautiful we all find certain things about ourselves even unnoticeable things and decide that we don't like them or that they’re ugly. The logic or psychological reasoning behind why we think this way has always made me think and wonder. I didn’t have to do much research when developing my project because I was already used to working with clay and sgraffito materials. The one new material that I had to get used to was the wire I used to detail my work, I had never used wire before the project. I think my sculptures and my sustained investigation show my deep thought by how I used tools to carve my detailed facial designs into the clay and I made each unique and somewhat abstract.

My sculptures show practice and experimentation by the visible progress as my sustained investigation evolved. I had to revise my first sculpture a lot because the first ended up being a complete mess and the paint started to peel off so I had to redo the entire thing. I experimented with how I used the wire in my project and how I could use it to add dimension to my work and structure. I used the same materials in all of my sculptures and they all had the same theme, though they all had the same theme and were relatively the same I made sure to still make each piece unique. I used my space by making each piece somewhat the same shape, just different sizes. I didn't want my work to fit perfectly together. I chose to do this to add to my abstract like theme. All of my works are made with the same materials and show a pattern and theme.

I chose these specific materials because I was already comfortable with this material, because of this I also chose to use a material that I had never used before which was the wire. I also used these materials because I knew that the clay would work well with how I wanted to sgraffito my work. You can see in my work that throughout my sustained investigation I used the same materials and process because all of my works look somewhat the same. I tried to show and use what I’ve learned during our 3D design class.
