The Will of Richard Tylden of Tenterden in the County of Kente, yeoman, 22 January 1565-6. My body to be buried in the parish where I die. To the poor people of Tenterden.

  • To my wife Elizabeth half of my household stuff, and various articles, including barley due me from Wyllyam Gerrys, live stock, all woolen cloth not made into garments, and angle noble, a double ducat, and 20s.
  • The residue of my household stuff to my four daughters, Julyan, Agnes, Thomasen, and Mary Tylden, equally divided, and to each 30 pounds at marriage of age of twenty years.
  • To servant John Mills 30 pounds in satisfaction of an account between him and me, and a cloak.
  • To son John Tylden four pairs of hose, two coats, one of marbyll and another of russet, two hats, two new leather jerkins, a dublet of chamblett, and my white dublet.
  • To Thomas Tylden my son a coat to be had of Peter Peyrs, my next best hat and a pair of hose.

Rough transcription: This is my last will concerning my lands in Tenterden and Benynden. My wife Elizabeth to have during her widowhood the occupation of my parlor and buttery adjoining, two chambers over them, and the garret loft over, the buttery next the hall door, with use of bakehouse, brewhouse, malt house, the head of my barn called the tan house, east garden, and water (rights ???) of the pits or ponds. Also I give her eight loads of wood and two hundred faggots. My garden called new garden and five pieces of land or wood containing twenty acres at the back side of my messuage in Tenterden, and three other pieces called pigge holes, containing seventeen acres of land and wood,to my wife until my son John Tilden shall accomplish the age of four and twenty years, if she remain my widow so long, and not else. Son John to have the said lands at the said age and pay to my wife 6 pounds 13s. 4d. a year during her life. I give to my wife toward the keeping of my children 6 pounds to be paid out of my lands in Tenterden until my youngest child come to the age of twelve years, and if she die before that time, then Walter Bygg my executor to have the bringing up of my children. To Thomas Tilden my son all my lands and tenements in the parish of benynden, when he shall accomplish the age of four and twenty years. My executor to take the residue of all profits of my lands and tenements in Tenterden and Benynden until my son John come to his said age toward the performance of my will and paying my debts, and when son John accomplish the said age, then he to receive all the profits of the foresaid lands in Tenterden and Benynden before willed to Thomas Tilden until the said Thomas accomplish his said age, and the John to pay to Thomas 50 pounds. My executors shall take own and sell the long houses along the street of my tenement in Benynden, and make a pale and gate for the passage into said tenement, and build a barn there at my house where it stood before thirty-six feet by twenty feet. If either of my two sons die before the age of four and twenty years without lawful issue, the survivor shall pay to my daughters then living 20 pounds apiece. If all my children die without lawful issue, then the said lands and tenements in Tenterden to John Mills and his heirs, and my lands and tenements in Benynden as follows: to my brother-in-law Thomas Glouer of Benynden two pieces of land called Barnfild and Oxenlease lying betwwen a lane ther and his house, and the residue of my lands and tenements in Benynden to the relief of the poor of Tenterden and Benynden, to be letten and the profits distributed by the church wardens. "Thomas Tilden acquired lands in Sussex (possibly through his third wife, Alice.) It is not clear that he ever resided there. He was named eleventh Jurat in Queen Elizabeth’s Charter for Tenterden, dated 1600. He removed to Wye where he held lands. His son Thomas lived in Wye also. The date of, and reasons for, his removal is not clear. His oldest son (third child) Nathaniel, our first American Ancestor, remained in Tenterden, became Jurat, then Mayor in 1622, an emigrated with his family to America, in 1634-5. Between 1604 and 1614, Thomas Tilden moved from Tenterden and went, perhaps, to East Guilford, County Sussex, which is not much beyond the border from Tenterden, as he possessed considerable real estate there according to his will. My wife Alyce shall have the use of all my household stuff and moveable goods during her life, with liberty to dispose of them to all or any of my children during her life and at her death to dispose of them that remain to such of my children as shall be living and not elsewhere. To my son Thomas Tylden 5 pounds.My will concerning the disposition of all my lands, tenements and hereditaments in the Counties of Sussex and Kent or elsewhere within the Realm of England is as follows:
    • First my will & meaning is that Nathaniell my sonne his heyres & Assignes shall for ever holde and enioye o peece of fresh marshe land lyinge in the parish of East Guyldeford in the Countye of Sussex called by the name of Cowelees contayneinge by estymation xxx acres accordinge to one deede of feafment thereof by me made to the use of the said Nathaniell Itm I doe will give and bequeath to the said Nathaniell my sonne & to his heyres forever one piece of fresh mersh land with the appurtenances called or knowne by the name of the Gyve acres lyinge & beinge in the aforesaid Parish of East Guyldeford together with a sufficeint carrying way to carrye driue goe to & for him his heyres & Assignes through one peece of land called the upper peece of the lesser Spanyards lyinge in Guyldfford aforesaid.
    • To my sons Joseph and Hopestill Tilden their heirs and assigns forever the aforesaid piece of land called the upper piece of the lesser Spanyards containing twenty acres.
    • To sone Freegift Tilden and his heirs forever, if he live to the age of one and twenty years, a piece of fresh mersh land in East Guyldford containing fifteen acres known by the name of the nether piece of the lesser Spanyards and abutting upon Cowe lees aforesaid toward the south,with right of way to said land through the land called the upper piece of the lesser Spanyards bequeathed to son Nathaniel. If Freegift die before the age of one and twenty years, reversion to sons Nathaniel and Hopestill and their heirs forever.
    • During the minority of Freegift 10 pounds a year to be paid to wife Alice toward her jointure of 20 pounds made by me to her during her life, the other 10 pounds of the said 20 pounds to be paid out of the lands bequeathed to sons Joseph and Hopestill. To son Freegift at the age of one and twenty years my messuage with the barn and other buildings, orchard, garden and seven pieces of land containing seventeen acres now in the occupation of the widow Gylbert, lying in the parish of Cranbrook upon the den of Omenden.If he die before said age, reversion to son Joseph and his heirs. Wife Alyce to receive the profits of all Freegift’s land during his minority and use them to see him brought up to learning, and if she die,son Joseph to receive them for that purpose, allowing to Freegift sufficient maintenance and yielding an account to him when he accomplishes his age of one and twenty years.

    • (The will was contested 23 September 1617, the widow Alice Tilden and sons Nathniel Tilden of Tenterden, Hopestill Tilden of the town of Sandwich, and Thomas Tilden and Freegift Tilden of Wye bringing suit agains the Executor Joseph Tilden. 27 March 1618 sentence was given for the confirmation of the will, the judgement being that the testator was saneat the time the will was made.   1. Nathaniel Tilden (c 28 July 1583, Tenterden - died in Massachusetts 1641) "the son of Thomas and Alice (Biggs) Tilden. Background on his family is given in NEHGR 65:322, 75:226, and 114:153. Tilden came to New England in the Hercules 1634-35 accompanied by his wife Lydia (Huckstep), seven children, and seven servants. He settled in Scituate and he probably died there between may and July 1641. All the children of Nathaniel and Lydia Tilden were born in England, five dying there prior to the family's departure. The children were Thomas, who died young; Mary, who married Thomas Lapham; Joseph, who died young; Sarah who married George Sutton; Joseph, who married Alice or Elizabeth Twisden; Stephen, who died young; Thomas, who married Elizabeth (Bourne) Waterman; Judith, who married Abraham Preble; Winifred, who died young; Lydia, who died young; Lydia who married Richard Garrett; and Stephen, who married Hannah Little. Mary and Sarah were married on the same day, 13 March 1636-37 (NEHGR 9:286), and their husbands were Tilden's servants. After his death, his widow Lydia married Timothy Hatherly. Elizabeth French shows in NEHGR 70:256 that Lydia (Huckstep) (Tilden) Hatherly was a cousin of Thomas Hatch, q.v., who also came to New England in the Hercules and settled at Scituate. Tilden was of the gentry and addressed aMr., and he was one of the wealthier Scituate residents. He dated his will 25 May 1641, inventory 31 July 1641, and he names his wife Lydia and his children Stephen; Lydia; Joseph; Thomas; Judith; Mary, the wife of Thomas Lapham; and Sarah, the wife of George Sutton; and he also mentioned two indentured servants, Edward Jenkins and Edward Tarte. Spread of the Tildens during the 1400''s

There do not appear to be any genealogies connected to the spread of the Tilden surname, throughout Kent, during the 1400s. Four real estate transactions serve as an illustration.

1. Stephen Telden was involved in a real estate purchase that took place in three parishes during 1436:

    • 1436 Real estate purchase CP 25/1/115/310, number 411. Link: Image of document at AALT County: Kent. Place: Westminster.
      • Date: Two weeks from St Hilary, 14 Henry VI [27 January 1436].
      • Parties: John Terysasshe and Stephen Telden', querents, and John Iregge of Haukherst and Joan, his wife, deforciants.
      • Property: 1 messuage, 100 acres of land, 16 acres of meadow, 40 acres of wood and 3 shillings and 6 pence of rent in Sandherst, Haukherst and Lamberherst.
      • Action: Plea of covenant.
      • Agreement: John Iregge and Joan have acknowledged the tenements to be the right of John Terysasshe, as those which the same John and Stephen have of their gift, and have remised and quitclaimed them from themselves and the heirs of Joan to John Terysasshe and Stephen and the heirs of John for ever.
      • Warranty: Warranty.
      • For this: John Terysasshe and Stephen have given them 100 marks of silver.

2. Two years prior to that, Roger Telden was involved in a real estate sale that involved parcels from Cranbrook, in the east, to my Tilden's ancestral parish of Rainham 26 miles to the West:

    • 1433/4 real estate sale - CP 25/1/115/308, number 359. Link: Image of document at AALT County: Kent. Place:Westminster.
      • Date: Two weeks from St John the Baptist, 11 Henry VI [8 July 1433]. And afterwards one week from St Hilary, 12 Henry VI [20 January 1434].
      • Parties: John Eytherst, Robert Torre, Robert Colyer and William Nynne, querents, and Roger Telden' and Denise, his wife, John Boteler and Benet, his wife, and Robert Nynne and Avice, his wife, deforciants.
      • Property: 2 messuages, 102 acres of land, 16 acres of pasture, 7 and a half acres of marsh and a rent of 12 quarters and 4 bushels of barley in Reynham, Frythynden' and Cranebrok'.
      • Action: Plea of covenant.
      • Agreement: Roger and Denise, John Boteler and Benet, Robert Nynne and Avice have acknowledged the tenements and rent to be the right of John Eytherst, of which the same John, Robert Torre, Robert Colyer and William have 1 messuage, 86 acres of land, the pasture and marsh and a rent of 7 quarters of barley their gift, and have remised and quitclaimed them from themselves and the heirs of Denise, Benet and Avice to John Eytherst, Robert Torre, Robert Colyer and William and the heirs of John Eytherst for ever. And besides Roger and Denise, John Boteler and Benet, Robert Nynne and Avice granted for themselves and the heirs of Denise, Benet and Avice that 1 messuage, 16 acres of land and a rent of 5 quarters and 4 bushels of barley - which William Godherd' and Margaret, his wife, held for the life of Margaret of the inheritance of Denise, Benet and Avice in the vills of Frythynden' and Reynham on the day the agreement was made, and which after the decease of Margaret ought to revert to Roger and Denise, John Boteler and Benet, Robert Nynne and Avice and the heirs of Denise, Benet and Avice - after the decease of Margaret shall remain to John Eytherst, Robert Torre, Robert Colyer and William Nynne and the heirs of John, to hold together with the aforesaid tenements and rent of the chief lords for ever.

      • circa 1681 - Samuel Tylden Overseer of the Poor in Cranbrook appraised the goods of Quakers in his parish and often clashed with them about not their paying tithes to the Anglican church . 3. John Tilden was a beneficiary, rather than participant, in another transaction that shows the Tilden family in my ancestral area.

      • Date: The day after Ascension, 2 Richard III [13 May 1485].
      • Parties: William Fissher and John Brode, querents, and William Lorde and Joan, his wife, deforciants.
      • Property: 1 messuage, 45 acres of land, 4 acres of meadow, 20 acres of pasture, 3 acres of wood, 33 shillings and 4 pence of rent and a rent of 26 hens and 200 eggs in Bergh'stede and Ledes.
      • Action: Plea of covenant.
      • Agreement:William Lorde and Joan have acknowledged the tenements and rent to be the right of William Fissher, as those which the same William and John have of their gift, and have remised and quitclaimed them from themselves and the heirs of Joan to William Fyssher and John and the heirs of William for ever.Warranty: Warranty.For this: William Fissher and John have granted to William Lorde and Joan the tenements and rent and have rendered them to them in the court, to hold to William Lorde and Joan, of the chief lords for the lives of William Lorde and Joan. And after the decease of William and Joan the tenements and rent shall remain to John Mason' and John Tylden' and the heirs of the same John Mason', to hold of the chief lords for ever.
