Walter Quaife (about 1580 - believed to have died March 16, 1625) married Constance Cossam (c 23rd May 1585 Heathfield, Sussex) on 19th Jul 1613 St Laurence Church, Hawkhurst. Constance was the daughter of Gregory Cossom & Agnes Mercer.
One has to wonder if he was related to Richard Quaife of Goudhurst, victualler, who was in the list of recognizances taken before William Sedley, Justinian Champneis and Edmund Cook on 7 Sept 1610 (Kent Quarterly Sessions, QM/RLv/228/8)
My cousin Deena McEwen, who transcribed Quaif entries from the Hawkhurst register, pointed to the fact Walter did not christen his son John prior to burial as a sign he might have been a non-conformist. It was not uncommon for families to alternate their religious practises. In her study QUAKERS IN KENT (pp 4,5), Gilliam Rickard noted that some families christened some of their children as Quakers and others in the Anglican church. One family had 7 children christened as Quakers and 3 as Anglicans - but, up until 1665, there is only one child in Kent known to have been recorded in both registers.
