Lena Emily Perrett (chrs Jan 13 1850, Amport - c1918, Henley on the Thames) m Stephan Richard Hales (1857-1930) January 11 1881 at St Mary's Parish Church, Henley on the Thames, Oxfordshire.
There were no Perretts in the area, but Hilary Fisher, from the Henley Library writes that "It was Lena Emily Perrett who was of this Parish . I suggest that she was either living or working in Henley or that she stayed with a Henley family long enough to have her banns read in Henley."
After their marriage, the Hales family lived on Bell street, Henley on the Thames. They kept 2 servants. We know little of their marriage, except for photos of them dressed in costumes from the mid sixteenth and late nineteenth centuries.
She is remembered as being especially close to her son Clifford Walter Hales, who intially turned his pay, as a WWI artillery driver in the Canadian 2nd division, over to her. Cliff was visiting Henley when he developed an acute appendicitis in 1915. He met Nellie Armstrong while she was nursing him in the hospital and married her before heading for the front.
Family tradition asserts that Lena died in the Asian flu epidemic in 1918. Her death certificate, sent to me by Kim McDonald, states: died 4 Aug 1918, at 20 Market Place, Henley upon Thames, age 64, wife of Stephen Richard Hales, a baker and confectioner; cause of death: bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema - certified by J F Windsor, M.D.; name and address of informant: Florence Hales, daughter, present at the death, 20 Market Place, Henley upon Thames.
Clifford was serving in France at that time. He and Nellie visited Henley before going to Canada in 1919.
