CHILDHOOD
Harriet was the eldest of David Sargent and Mary Hickmott's seven children, born about 1797, and raised in a home burst with enthusiasm for the methodist revival. As someone from the Methodist chapel in Hartlip later wrote, "There was no half-heartedness about the expression of their feelings when opportunity afforded: they would dance and shout for very joy."
She most likely brought this to her marriage with Phillip Goodhew, for their daughters Anna and Sarah were both christened in the Methodist Chapel in Sittingbourne.
MARRIAGE
I suspect Phillip and Harriet were shy. They were 38 and 34, respectively, at the time of their union. Harriet’s siblings Robert and Charlotte witnessed the ceremony, in Borden.
They raised four children, one of whom was our ancestor Anna Goodhew, the wife of Stephen Hales.
