Loot - 8 scalps at 8 bucks a scalp
Info - this was raiding party. Faces were panted in death masks. Heads shorn so scalps were less valuable. (still worth 8 bucks) Perception 15 reveals a pair of horses nearby with the bodies of two gunslingers from Winterhaven. They have been stripped of valuables.
Winterhaven
Welcoming committee - a pair of riflemen ar on roofs in the town and when people are seen approaching they signal the deputee to greet travelers. The deputee will take one other part time deputee with him if the group is large or well armed.
saloon - Most town activity is at the saloon. There is always a game of cards and at night there is a piano player and even dancing girls on the weekend. Most of the town's men take their meals at the saloon. The lady running the establishment is always friendly and flirts with patrons but recommends one of her girls for any interested parties. The town general store is right next door and shares a porch.
post office - The post office handles town mail, all telegraphs, and serves as a bank for anyone not interested in using the Mayor's services. Several people work most hours and it has well secured doors and windows as well as a safe that requires both a combination and a key to open. There is always a guard in the post office during business hours. The telegraph service is down and has been down for a couple days now.
doctor's house - Doctor Valentine is the town's most elgible batchlor. He is moneyed an dlives in the nicest house in town. He has a facination for tribal medacine and teh occult and is a fan of Doctor Cranes published work on the fallacy of mythology. The doctor specializes in Phamasuticals and medacine but is not surgery. He assists Mther Linora with midwifery but she is generally more experienced with women's matters.
church - Mother Linora runs the church and womans center. This is the place where most women in the town take their meals and congregate. The church is the oldest building in town at iver 200 years old. It has signs of having been damaged in the past but is in good repair. The buildings to either side are later additions and are not on original church grounds.
old castle - Mayor Payton Ernest lives in the old castle and literally owns the town. All the money in town has his likeness (called Ernest money and jokingly referred to as worthless) His steward us the one who pays out reward for indian scalps. ($8 partial/shorn, $10 complete)
NPCs
Mayor Payton - Warlord3. Rich, a bit greedy, but honest.
Mother Bethany Linora - priestess of the church and head of the womans circle. Well spoken.
Salma Rollins - propetier of the saloon and madam of the brothel run therein.
Winona - working woman at saloon with long dark hair and exotic eyes. Real vamp.
Mother Stacy Miller. wife if Sam Miller (Prospector)
Sam died in mining accident with Percy Rollins (husband of salma)
After death mine was taken over by ne-er do wells who used it to hide moonshine rather than mine. Stacy kept visiting and met indian. (Ishtakhaba "Sleepyeye" whom she fell in love with. She got pregnant and a year after her husband died she had a baby. the townfolk were incensed at teh "Red twins" and lynched Ishtakhaba. Her children Winona and Taoyateduta were put up for adoption and mothe rkilled herself.
Son fell in prospectors daughter followed sone around (both 11) She was raped. She hates prospectors now. Was taken in by Salma and has be prostitute since then "Why not she is just an indian and broke in anyhow." Winona only cares for 3 people sherif Keefim (quarter indian), Salma (mother friend an boss), and Mother Lianora (decent peron but religious prude. Also her brother but he hurt her by hurting Keefim and nw she is unsure. Will appeal for help.
Old Gus - regular in the saloon. Never stops talking. Bit of a bore.
Doctor Valentine - doctor and well off bachlor. Interest in the arcane.
Alan Wordsmith - press reporter for the sun times.
Ronald Keefim - Sheriff, currently laid up with a stomache infection at doctors house.
Events
Welcoming comittee - (pointers to doctor, castle steward for scalps, or the saloon for rooms.
Press interview (John) Alan Wordsmith attempts to corner John Marshall and get his story. Alan is a bit hard bitten though figety fideling with his glasses. He is obsessed with getting "The big scoop". Alan knows about the Kung-fu willie and is going to try to find out about who John is after and what he knows about Kalarial. Alan will point the sheriff at the indian camp to give himself time to get a message to Kalarial.
Medical Emergency (Edgar) The doctor has 3 cases from a recent disasterous expedition against the indians by the town guard. He looks tired though obviously handsome and well dressed despite his fatigue. If he hears that another doctor is present in town he will immediately introduce himself. He has 3 critical cases.
Sheriff Keefim - took a shot to the belly and now it is grossly swollen, The wound while treated well is oozing pus and infection has obviously set in. The sheriff is pale feverish and sweating profusely. Obviously in critical danger (Medicine 15 - have to surgicaly remove most of intestines.)
Constable Stone - Hit in shoulder and hip. Both wounds treated well. Pulse is rapid, Breathing is labored, when awake he can not see, vomitting, and now unconciousness. (Perception 10, snakebite on toe right by tonail. Medicine 17 to treat.)
Tom Hardy - Collapsed in attack on indians. No visible signs of damage. Pulse is strong, but only wakes when vigorously disturbed. Immediately collapses upon removal of stimulous. Medical stupor. (Medicine 25, and ongoing pharmacutical help)
The mayor and the seductrice (Hoss/Fredricks) point party at the castle steward and on way they run into a matron struddling with 4 bags of groceries. (seque to Betheny below)
Bethany (Hoss/Fredricks) - A well dressed middle age woman puts down a couple bags in front of you and asks "Wes, be a dear and and help me carry this over to the meeting hall." She is immediately appologetic "Dear me, Wes has the same type of hat and hurt his eye in the attack. Well I couldn't see past the bags. I do beg your pardon, sir. I will be on my way." She will chat up the fellow and be welcoming and talk about the womens center and the meals held there. She is planning on going through the church to the meeting center but the area is sancified and will cause Fredricks pain.
At castle a diplomacy of 18 will get to the mayor. anything above 10 will get to the steward (Stewart Parsins) whom is droll, outwardly expresionless, and very british. Mr Parsins will be polite but terse and close any dealing quickly so he can get back to running the manor but without giving any sign of rushing, but a cold formality to help rush the group on. The pay will be in Ernest money ONLY.
Back at the Saloon "Well well well, what do we have here?" An exotically attractive lady (Winona) in long slinky dress slides up and flirts in a purring playful manner she will flirt with ANYONE if it means getting out of town. She is half indian half white and the recent indian problems have been cutting into her buisiness. A drunkard might call her a slut or a damn indian to her face. She will ignore the drunkard as well as she can but that may just provoke him. Settling things peacefully will get Salma to give teh group free lodging. Starting a fight will make her require a deposit. Either way Winona will explain her name means first daughter in indian terms and say she had been abandoned by the church as a babe. She will beg that the party take her with them when they leave Winterhaven. She owes a sizable tab $200 at the bar for "lodging fees" but it has to be paid in cash and not ernest money which is all she gets from locals. The money is partly to cover dresses and perfume she had to order from outside town and which she is allowed to pay down interest but of which the principal is only payable in real cash. (since that is what it was bought with) She will plan on abandoning anyone once she leaves town, she has had enough of serving men will being a whore in winterhaven. she has very good diplomacy/insight (11 / 9)
START IN PROGRESS
Mystery (All) Someone cut the wire to the telegraph office.
Scene of the crime - Side of telegraph office where wire comes into the building. There is a broken crate in an alleyway across from the alley behind the general store. a man, the town drunk was arrested when he was found next to the crate.
broken crate - (it was not broken initially) it was empty but when repairing it the repairman (middleweight man) stood on it and it broke. Crate used to hold wine bottles. Drunk woke up and saw a crate of wine in morning so he headed over to investgate but it was empty.
alleyway across way - smells like urine and vomit. There are a couple newspapers here as well as a leather strap (from a sandal)
town drunk (Larry) - has sandal tied on with twine. He was passed out in the alleyway. he is highly suggestible. (currently drunk and high) He will blame Indians/miners but his tale will also mention flowers (perfume) and someone stepping on him. (like getting stabbed with a knife (high-heels))
whores - All were working that night. (Winona not so much) If confronted she will confess. She is half Indian and her brother is leading the attacks. He told her to leave town but she was still in debt and she was not going to be a squawb. She cut the wire to keep her brother from getting the army out here but that was it. She does not know of the telegram, but her brother did say that he was involved in something big. Said that the money in this town woudl be worth squat soon enough and she woudl be able to buy her way out of debt, but he went too far constable stone was a good man and so we some of teh others who were killed. She has no sympathy for them. She will tell teh party right where the waterfall is and how to approach, she doesn't know where teh camp is.
note - telegraph lines were cut outside town
The mystery was who had sent the telegram about the train robbery but the indians cut the lines out of town when they attacked so help coudl not be called. And the telegraph operators were sent home since there was nothign for them to do without a workign connection.
Ben suggested someone knowledgeable for clues but expensive (town drunk, prostitute?)
Drunk is an semi-cooperative witness, tripping on hallucnagens.
Only semi-coherent, prone to rambling and very suggestible. (sober up makes angry, diplomacy/intimidate/booze needed)
Issue - most involved parties are distracted by siege.
Reward for mystery? (directions for stealth attack on waterfall)
END IN PROGRESS
Mayor (All) Payton descends on the inn for dinner. Townfolk take of hats and bow to him in passing. It will take him only a few moments to find out about the new arrivals and search them out.
"Excuse me, I heard you made it past the indians to get to our town. would you be interested in joining me for dinner? I am curious about your journey here." He is well dressed with a ruffled shirt and pressed pants. He is obviously better dressed than any of the villagers but he neither as tall or as handsom as the portrait on the Ernest money would make him seem (Perception 10 to tell it is the same man) he seems comfortable in the saloon and nods to a few of the regulars.
He offers 10 dollars (ernest) per head even if shorn or 100 dollars (ernest) if they chase them off. He doesn't particularly care if they are killed or scared off though he prefers that they not be able to return once the group has left. He will up his offer to real cash but he will twitch and squirm while doing so. There is honestly very little real cash in the town. He will offer 200 ernest before 100 real cash. he may even explain the logic behind ernest money. (prevent banditry, encurage people to buy local, reduced taxes (slightly illegal), he will not state that is also makes it very hard to emmigrate out of the town even though it is a major factor.)
