You are champions in the service of Baron Lidmar. You have served as his right hand and he has given you training, protection, and personal freedom. The baron is not a charismatic leader, but he rules with a strict but even hand. He is not beloved though and the church in particular dislikes his rule. In fairness his restrictions on religious practices are pretty strict. Religious symbols are not allowed to be shown in public and knights of the church may not own metal weapons or armor unless the weapons were provided by the Baron for militia service. Yet while they grumble the kingdom has done well under Baron Lidmar's firm guidance. Even the underclass, the half-men that make up most of the labor force are given rights. They may not be allowed military service, but their lot is better here than elsewhere in the southern kingdoms. ------------- Plot preview: ------------- Soon after returning from a leave you and your colleagues are called into Baron Lidmar's private conference chamber. "I hope you have had a nice break. I am afraid that things have progressed poorly in your absence." "I have a growing unease about some political currents in the country. This week, when I asked for a reading on my future from three different groups I am almost positive that they were hiding something from me. Unfortunately magic is being worked so I can not find the thread of truth." "I need you to journey to Fort Willhome and find Derry Renthrow. He was my advisor for many years and is something of an oracle. With his help we should be able to find the truth of what is happening." "Derry's last message to me said the goblin swarms have been hitting hard this year. I am sending a company of 40 men with you under the context of replenishing Fort Willhome's garrison. Your top priority is to get Derry my message and bring him back. But try to make sure that Derry's departure will not allow the fort to fall into goblin hands. That would be just the sort of story my critics need." "Oh, and one last thing. I want some of you to stay by my side. I have a sense that I may need you to be more places than one. Other special forces members will be found to take your place if you stay to help me"
