Artist Statement:

The subject of these drawing is roses (White and Red), my mom's office, and my face. The background in the roses drawing is supposed to be in a small world (That is why the horizon line is an arc instead of a line). I made the picture of the roses by sketching the roses, then using my multi-liners to draw the petals. After this I shaded using my grey markers. To finish it I used a little dark blue at the darkest shadows and some crosshatching. I made the picture of the office by sketching the shapes out then using my pencil to darken important lines. From there I did some very simple shading to give it a cartoonish look. I made the face by sketching then shading. I chose to make these particular drawings because they matched up with the prompt and would be fun to draw. In each of these I used line, shape, value, form, texture, and space. In the rose drawing I also used the color blue/grey. In the rose drawing I used balance, contrast, and unity. In the office drawing I used emphasis. In the face drawing I tried to use formal balance, but I don't thin the face is symmetrical enough to call it that.

I think each of these could've been improved if I spent more time on it. If I had more time I would've used a ruler to make sure the lines are straight (The lines look particularly bad in the picture because it was bent while I was taking the picture. I would've used a tortilon to blend the face better. Aside from this, I would’ve been able to focus on the sketch of the face. I wish I spent more time fixing the face shape. Another thing I would add would be a background (for the rose and the face. For example, I could’ve added a climbing gym in the background or even just a repeating pattern so I could activate all four corners of the page. Even though it only took me about two hours to finish these drawings, these drawings game me a good example of where I am with portraits and drawing from life which is not something I’m used to. Aside from this, it also game me practice looking (perspective drawing) at something and seeing the shapes that it is made up of instead of looking at a desk then drawing what I think a desk looks like.
