Stars and Stripes

The subject of my drawing is an eagle flying straight into a brick wall while wearing a blindfold that says nationalism. I made the original using sharpie, but I decided to draw it digitally because it was very messy. I decided to use only the solid brush because I wanted it to match the solid colors of the American flag. In this drawing, I used line to show shape. I used shape. I used color to show value and texture. I used value to show form. I used the rule of thirds to lay out my drawing originally, but in the process, it changed so it does not qualify anymore.

My project began as a light pencil sketch. After testing out various composition ideas in thumbnail size, I started working on a larger version on bristol paper. Then, finally, I scanned it and worked on it in krita, the digital art program I use most commonly. The meaning behind this artwork is that the American flag has become a symbol of our nationalism. The blindfold represents the fact that it is blinding our country and causing us to make discussions that are not in our best interests. For example, tariffs. This project matters to me because I care about this topic. Although the idea is great, there is still a lot about the drawing that I wish was done better:

  • I was planning on adding clouds in the background
  • The colors are too saturated
  • The letters in Nationalism are not spaced correctly
  • The letters are hard to read with the saturated colors behind them
  • The eagle was drawn poorly
  • The feathers on the wing look messy
  • The bricks are not in perspective
  • There is a color that is not red white and blue (yellow black grey)
