Ink Girl

10" X 7"

The story behind this artwork is that I always draw a girl using the patterns of the ink splat to create all of the details. This project relates to my life because I can see the improvement in terms of composition and technique I've made over the past 2 years or so. Looking back at my old drawings, I can remember when I was happy with the proportions and facial expression, but now, I can see the flaws and avoid them in my current art. This is inspirational because I can't imagine where I will be, in terms of artistic skill, in two years from now.

I made this on a sheet of paper pre-splashed with ink. I used pencil to sketch my ideas onto the paper. When I was satisfied with my idea, I used sharpie and micron pen to create patterns mimicking the splashes of ink already on the page. Then I used a white gel pen to add patterns within the hair and fixing the lips. Unfortunately, the white is not entirely opaque, so the sharpie can be seen through it.

I used pattern to show the more complex form and texture of my hair. and I used pure black rather than greyscale so that my drawing would stand out. Although it is difficult to see when the drawing is cropped this way, I made use of the space to create the least empty areas in the background. My project started as a few splashes of ink on watercolor paper. Then I added pencil and sharpie. When I was content with that, I decided that my drawing did not have enough detail, so I used a white gel pen to create pattern within the sections of hair. I thought that it made the drawing to busy, so I used sharpie to go over random sections of the gel pen. Finally, I fixed the shape of the lips. Overall, there is not much that I would want to do to this specific drawing. I could add a background in the corners of the drawing. Additionally, I could fix the positioning and size of the ear.
