Sgraffito Tile

This sgraffito tile has two different types of flowers and the sun. To make this, I molded a cylinder out of clay, and I poked a hole in it so I could hang it on a wall. When the cylinder hardened, I painted several coats of black paint. After this, I created several designs that I wasn't entirely happy with, but I had to move on. Next, I used a tool to scrape paint off. This was challenging because I could not get the detail that I wanted. In this artwork, I used line to show shape and value, and I used shape and value to show form.

In this piece I used the odd number of subjects rule. In addition, I used low key lighting to add dimension (it didn't work). While I was on the design stage, I came up with about 15 different designs, and this took up a lot of time. Throughout this process, the design changed significantly. Then, I scraped off the black paint into the patterns I had planned out. This is where I am now. Later, after I finish my prints, I plan to go back to this and fix it. I will likely paint over this so I can have cleaner lines, and I don't want speckles in my finished product.

The meaning behind this artwork is that there is two different types of flowers and the sun. This relates to my life because I'm planing on growing some flowers in a mini garden this summer. There are several things I will fix later:

  • The lines are not straight
  • There are speckles
  • There are no details
  • The flowers don't look like flowers
  • They look like they have 3 stems
  • The lighting on the flowers looks really ugly
  • The sun rays aren't even

Things I won't be able to change, but I won't make these mistakes again:

  • I shouldn't have accepted a bad sketch
  • I should've chosen clip art rather that a photograph to copy
  • I should've made a stronger composition.
  • I should've lined up the flowers with the angle at which it will be hanging
