Hand

The subject of my creation is a hand which is covered in galaxies and stars and has an asteroid that the hand is holding in its palm. I made this by creating a mold of a hand using the same material used in braces and pouring another material into the hardened form. Then, I took the form of the hand out and scraped out bubble shapes and painted it with multiple coats of watercolor. Then, I used Mod Podge to give it a finished look. I designed the work so that it would include line in the form and on the form with the watercolor. I used color to show depth and create interest and value. I used form to create depth and I used texture to give it a realistic form. I utilized contrast to emphasis the meteor and I used pattern to show the stars in the sky.

I used selective focus on things that are closer to give it a 3 dimensional effect. I used both sharp and soft focus to do this. My project started as a 3d hand. Then, I put bubble shapes into it. Then, I painted it and added some stars.

The meaning of my project is was originally going to be about global warming and trash in space, but I decided that my project makes more sense as a space. My project relates to my life because it was one of my first few attempts at reduction art. I would change the following about it:

  • There are too many stars
  • The black inside the hand is too dark
  • The planet are not great
  • The hand is a bit shiny
  • The hand's color is not cohesive
