Leaves

The subject of my creation is curling waves with some clouds and the sun in the background. I made the shapes of the highlights/Blank sections with leaves. Next I drew the leaves shapes with pencil. I tried to do this as lightly as possible. I outlined each of the shapes with pen and colored and shaded the remainder with water color. From there I darkened the lines in the foreground (Sea foam) and kept the lines in the background (Clouds) the same. I realised there was a couple places where the color went into the white areas so I added some white acrylic paint to cover it up. Lastly I added a yellow glow around the sun and some faint yellow light hitting the clouds and waves. I chose to create this specific design because when I was looking at my leaves the rounded leaves somehow reminded me of ocean waves. I used line thickness to give the drawing depth. The lines and shapes that make up the waves, clouds, and sun show value, texture and form. The color shows value and texture. The smoothness in the waves emphasises the movment from the waves and the the seafoam.

My project started as some leaves taped to a card. Then it became a pencil line showing the positioning of hilights. I colored it in with pen and watercolor. Then I went back several times to alter small details. I added more blue pigment to the water. I fixed the color that had leaked into the shapes. I added lin weight to the foreground. And lastly I added a halo around the sun with some yellow reflections. I came up with this idea because I was looking at my leaves the rounded leaves somehow reminded me of ocean waves. Aside from this I wanted practice drawing where hilights would go on objects. There are several things that bother me about this drawing:

  • I need to shade the seafoam and clouds (It can't look realistic without shading).
  • I should've chosen a abstract pattern or something easier.
  • I should've been more careful while coloring it in.
  • I should've made the drawing farther up so I could've shown some sand.
  • I should've used tape to make the horizon line straight
