Beautiful Oops

Artist Statement:

The subject of my creation is a girl made out of black dots that vary in size and concentration. The setting of this drawing is supposed to look abstract, but the dots in the sky make the background look a little like space. I made this by sketching out the shapes of her features and where shadows would go and then I outlined the features with many little dots using a ballpoint pen. From their I filled in the rest of the face and hair. I decided I did not like how blank the background looked, so I decided to fill it with more dots. Keeping in mind the fact that she should be the focus of the drawing I decided to make the dots large so that they would look similar to a solid black background. I chose to create this artwork because the ink splatters on the page reminded me of the dots in a pointillist drawing I saw recently online. I made this piece using the dots to show the lines and shape in the face and hair, and the concentration and size of the dots to show value and form. I used the size of the dots between the face and the background to emphasise the light on the face. In this drawing I used formal balance.

This piece started as a pencil sketch, then it became a face with a couple features outlined by dots in a line, then it became a drawing with shading. After this, I changed the background from white to filled with lots of large black dots. Making this piece was really good practice for creating a faces features without references and good practice for the shading of a face. There is many thing that bother me about this piece. First, the face shape is not symmetrical. The shading is not defined enough. The bangs do not have enough hair. The expression on the face looks weird because the eyebrows, eyelids, and mouth do not match up. I am semi content with this piece which is more than I say for the majority of the drawings I did.
