2d Design

This year, I have enjoyed art class, and I have really improved as an artist. One of my favorite projects to do, both this year and last, is the beautiful oops project. I find the challenge really enjoyable, and it is nice to see my improvement from my drawing last year. I also really enjoyed the circle project because it was the first time I tried digitally coloring a drawing, which had been something I wanted to try for a while. I had a lot of fun trying to create a magical-science-fiction scene. The emotion design was my favorite digital drawing I did this year. I enjoyed the freedom of trying to draw an emotion. I rarely draw anything that is not one hundred percent representational, so it was good to step out of my comfort zone. The editorial cartoon was one of the most researched drawings I did all year, and I think that, although the drawing itself is messy, the concept was well designed. Looking back at this year, my duck stamp project is my favorite physical drawing I did. It took me an incredibly long time, but seeing a realistic drawing slowly coming together is satisfying, and looking back at last year's, I can see the immense strides I've made in preserving the brightness of color, and overall realism.

This year, I struggled the most with finishing projects on time. This is often challenging for me because I don't always have the time to finish my projects at home. And, because I tend to be a perfectionist, I will try to make one section perfect rather than finishing the entire project. This has made my goal to get good preparedness grades challenging. Additionally, I have a hard time keeping my digital drawings from becoming messy. This is particularly challenging for me when I'm drawing digitally because I have not yet found a brush that I like for blending. Another thing I had a hard time with this year is composition. I understand the general rules, but I have a hard time incorporating them into the planning of my projects. For example, in my donate life poster, I have something at each of the focal points, but it is flat and it's composition looks messy.

I learned a lot this year. I have learned how to construct faces from circles (instead of my previous method which did not work out very well for me). I'm currently trying to apply this method to learn how to draw full body poses and foreshortening, but I have a long ways to go. I've learned how to use several helpful tools in Krita, the art program I've been using the most. I learned how to use the multiply option. I learned how to add color to a black and white drawing without redrawing it.

I improved considerably on my digital art skills, as I did more than half of the projects this year digitally. My work illustrates my growth as an artist. One of my biggest challenges in digital art is to draw faces because I often have trouble over or under blending the face or using the wrong skin tone colors. For example, in this drawing I worked on at home, I used white instead of yellow to show bright highlights.

In, the future, I will continue to improve on my digital art skills. I'm trying to do a new digital drawing each week, and I will continue to draw on a regular basis. More specifically, I will work on improving my use of color, composition, blending, and proportions. I want to try more advanced color schemes. I want to focus composition and more specifically how the eye moves when looking at a drawing I had done. That is part of why my seascape that I did this year looks so flat. In regards to future ideas of art projects, I would like to draw more portraits, and I would like to draw a webcomic. Additionally, I will finish the donate life and duck stamp project, so I can submit it to the competition.
