Organ and Tissue Poster

The subject of this piece is a girl, who was an organ donor, giving a heart to a girl that needs a heart to survive. The text is "Will You Save Lives with Organ and Tissue Donation?" First, I planed out the piece using a 4H pencil. Next, I built up layers of color using watercolor. Finally, I went back with a jelly-roller to add a couple highlights. I chose to create this specific design because I wanted to show the hospital and use two characters to express the idea of giving life. In this piece, I used line to show shape, value and color to show form and texture. FIrst, my project started out as three separate thumbnail sketches. Second, I made a final sketch. Third, I transferred the sketch to my final paper . Fourth, I added layers of watercolor until specific regions of the paper were opaque. Fifth, I used white paint and a jelly-roller pen to add highlights.

The meaning behind this project is that the girl who passed away decided to donate her organs and tissue, so she is giving the gift of life to a young girl. This project relates to my life because it was really good practice with watercolor. In this piece I got to try out masking fluid for my first time, and I was really happy with how the younger girl's face turned out in terms of colors in the face. I have been trying to improve at watercolor all year, and looking back at previous attempts at using watercolor to paint faces, I made a lot of progress. While I am happy with that one aspect of the painting, I'm not especially happy with the piece overall. There are several things I wish I could've done differently:

  • The other girl's face was done poorly and I should've used more lighter layers.
  • The other girl's eye was too close to the forehead.
  • The other girl's neck doesn't show any rotation.
  • The blanket and pillow doesn't have enough contrast.
  • The hospital machine in the back doesn't have enough contrast.
  • The words are messy and not entirely filled in.
  • The words are smudged,
  • The background is not evenly colored.
  • The background color is rather dull.
  • I should've used the masking fluid more.
  • The letters are not arranged well.
