Time Capsule

The subject of my drawing is a hand, my face, a hallway, and two of my white gel pens. The background of the pen drawing and the hand is a grey color, but the background of the pen is supposed to be a table, and the background of the hand drawing is supposed to be a shirt. I made all of these using the same materials. I did a very rough sketch with a 4H pencil. Then, I shaded with a 6B pencil to get shadows and midtones. Lastly, I cleaned it up with an eraser and a white gel pen. I used line to show shape, and I used value to show form and texture. One of my goals was to use contrast because I did not shade dark enough on last year's time capsules.

I used informal balance on three out of the four drawings. I used formal balance on the face drawing. My projects all started as a very rough sketch. Then, I added shadows and midtones with a softer pencil. Lastly, I cleaned up the drawing with an eraser and a gel pen. My pen drawing changed because I was originally planning on drawing a more complex composition.

The meaning behind these drawings is that I was trying a new drawing style. I wanted to go for something realistic but a little messy. I think I accomplished this goal, and I'm happy that they turned out this way. This project relates to my life because I will probably try something similar in the future. I would like to improve on the following. If I had more time I would've used a ruler to make sure the lines are straight. Aside from this, I would’ve been able to focus on the sketch of the face. I wish I spent more time fixing the face shape. Another thing I would add would be a more complex background. For example, I could’ve added a repeating pattern so I could activate all four corners of the page. These drawings game me a good example of where I am with portraits and drawing from life which is not something I’m used to. Aside from this, it also game me practice looking (perspective drawing) at something and seeing the shapes that it is made up of instead of looking at a desk then drawing what I think a desk looks like.
