Baby Chick

Scratchboard
The story behind this artwork is that I took a lot of photos at a farm last fall, and I found this picture where this baby chicken has a very inspired look. This project relates to me because I've been wanting to do a second scratchboard drawing for a long time now. I decided that this little chick was a really fitting photo for a scratchboard because it had a lot of texture and a large range of values.
I made this using scratchboard along with several tools to scratch the black off. One tool that worked really well was a scratchboard shader, which was textured to create small marks.
While creating this artwork, I layed out the general shapes of the largest shadows and highlights. Then, I went through copying each box with different tools to create a sense of realism. I used line to create shape and value and form. Each individual line contributes to the texture I was trying to make. I emphasised the chick by making sure there was black behind it's head so that it would stand out. Also, I tried to create movement using pattern in my mark making. My project started as a photograph. Then, I set up my drawing. Then, I copied it onto the scratchboard paper. Finally, I tried to make the highlights even lighter, but I accidentally scratched too far into the paper. It created a dark grey color, so I covered it with a thick layer of white acrylic paint. For next steps, I may want to fix up some of the feathers and make sure I erase all of the boxes.
