Technology Won't be Enough

Digital (procreate)

11"x7"

My prompt was "Draw a car that can only go up steps." I was designing the car while watching videos on the California fires, and I remembered Elon Musk's atrocious Cybertruck. It's not great that it's still seen as an environmentally friendly solution, and it's sort of disheartening to see how people think technology can save the planet from climate change. I thought that a car that could only go up steps is a good example of the type of thing technology can fix. I used line art because I wanted to try a different art style. This all relates to my life because I care about the environment, and I came up with an idea for a webcomic (hence practicing line art).

I made this using my tablet in procreate.

I started with the sketch, then I used a pen to create the line art, I filled it in with colors, and I added a multiply layer to create shadows. Lastly, I added highlights. I was surprised by how much more time this takes then shading. It's a lot harder to rely on implied detail. I used line and color to create value, and I used this to create form. However, I felt this was very much lacking in texture. I used the difference in line art between the foreground and the background to highlight the contrast between the two. My project started as an idea to make a car inspired by the Cybertruck, but from watching the news, I added a background I found relevant. Some next steps could be working on the lighting--I tried to make it dark because the topic is a bit dreary, but I don't think it works. I could fix the perspective on the steps. Procreate might have tools to help with perspective that I could try out. Lastly, I could spend more time on the car because I like the background better, and add texture to the marble steps.
