Concentration #5

Its in Our Nature

The subject of my creation is a flower with a human head in the center. The flower is smooth and very flowing. First, I created a sketch with my idea. Originally, it was going to be a face with live plants growing out of it and forming it. Then I created the head shape. This took me a very long time because I am not used to creating symmetry in 3 dimensions; every time I thought it was symmetrical, I would change the view and it would be off. After I finished this, I used a setting to make it have the chain-like pattern that can be seen above. Unfortunately, this did not translate to the 3D printing step because I did not have the time to print it big enough. Then, I designed the flower and added the face. Then, I 3D printed it using a MakerBot printer. Unfortunately, the file conversion removed many of the details I originally intended it to have. I printed it and sanded it. Later, I painted it testing out different colors before going with a purple, light orange combination. Then, I used a white gel pen to add detail, and I created a base made up of metal pieces. In this piece, I used texture and value to show form. I used contrast to show how the face does not belong with the flower. I used opposing colors to emphasize this. I tried to make the form of the flower more organic so it would show movement, but it was difficult within the program.

I used formal balance in the face, and I used sharp focus to emphasize the face. My project started out as an idea. This was originally going to be a face with the support of the plant made with the 3D printer and the main aspect being planted. Then, I created the head. Around this step, I realized that I would not have enough time to finish it and have the plant grow, so I decided to change my design. After that, I created the flower, and I combined them. Finally, I printed it, sanded it, painted it, and created a base.

The meaning of this artwork piece is that both nature and technology are important parts of humanity, so we cannot let technology ruin nature. This project relates to my life because it was the most improvised piece of artwork that I've done all year, and I had a lot of fun with it. However, there are still some aspects of it I wish I could improve:

There is hot glue visible on the bottom

The auto-generated supports were too hard to remove, but I don't like them in the sculpture

The face is not symmetrical

The colors I choose did not blend well

The eyes are a little too creepy
