Sculpture #2

The subject of my creation is a Red Wood tree from California. I made this by creating a tube of paper. Then, I used wire and tape to attach it to a platform. This was very challenging because the tree was much larger than its base. After that, I used thin, uneven pieces of paper to emulate bark texture. I created more texture at the bottom to show that the Red Wood tree is so big, it is more challenging to see the details at the top. After that, I added a branch with another tube of paper with wire acting as the support. Then, I used the scissors with more blades (I'm not exactly sure what to call them) to create strings of paper attached together at the base. Then, I crumbled them up and attached them to the tree using hot glue. I chose to create this specific image because I liked the use of line. I decided to not use color because I like the simplicity. I used the branch and the leaves at the top of the tree to play with space. I used the texture of the leaves to emphasis the movement of the wind through them.

I used selective focus on the texture of the bark. I used sharp focus at the bottom of the tree. I used informal balance of focuses. My project started as a tree trunk without texture. Then, I decided to stabilize it with wire. And, I added texture.

The story behind this artwork is that I went to visit Red Wood trees last year and I was inspired to do a artwork inspired by them. This project relates to my life because it is one of my favorite 3 dimensional pieces I have ever made, and I was really happy with my improvement. But, there are still many aspects of this that I want to change:

  • I was originally planning on adding a fence and a small person on the platform to show the scale
  • I would like to create more even foliage
  • I would like to create more precise bark textures using an exacto knife
