Final Project

Final Project Reflection:

For my final project, I re-drew a character that I made at the beginning of the year using the same materials. Surprisingly enough, I decided not try to go for a hyper-realistic portrait of somebody or something. Since I was already doing that as my last project in Foundations of Art, it made sense to make something more individual. So, I decided to look over my sketchbook. I decided to base my final project off of that specific drawing because, for a long time, it was my favorite drawing.

To make this drawing, I started with a basic sketch of the face. One of the ways I have improved my art skills by I can start drawings with the basic shapes instead of guessing. After this, I covered the mid-tone and highlight with my brightest blue color. From there, I used layering to get a seamless gradient between the shadow and the mid-tone. Next, I colored the hair using the dark red marker and a dark grey marker. After I was satisfied with the quality of the shading, I used my jelly-roller (white gel pen) to add highlights to the face and hair. Even with the highlights, there wasn't enough contrast, so I colored the background black. This created the effect that there was some sort of blue light reflecting on her face.

Why did I decide to use this for my final project? I think this drawing represents my current drawing style well, and the progression between these two drawings shows improvement in so many areas. This includes drawing style, better blending of colors, and more accurate proportions (to the point where I feel better experimenting with them). I chose to use this drawing to show my improvement and learning throughout the year because it incorporates the results of a lot of experimentation with head shape, hair, and color.
