Sustained Investigation #9

If You Have Nothing to Hide, You Have Nothing to Fear

Research and practice:

With this work, I wanted to use Foucault's idea of the panopticon and apply it to the digital world, since surveillance within the digital world isn't taken as seriously. I showed both the standard surveillance done by the government through the watchtower that has been exposed by various whistle blowers (ie how the government can spy through the devices of anyone who is associated with someone who is associated with etc a suspected terrorist which works out to more than the population of the world if you assume everyone has 100 people they're associated with). And, I showed how that surveillance can be piggy-backed on by more malicious hackers. Although fear mongering isn't productive, I'm always stunned by the lack of awareness about such issues.

I made this on my tablet with procreate. I used an abstract brush to create the bright colors of the screens, and I used an overlay to take those already-bright colors and make them brighter.

In order to make this, I researched the panopticon and found photos to create a representative drawing. After that, I drew several thumbnail sketches, keeping the focuses of the drawing on the thirds.

Given how limited the space I have to answer the questions is within AP, I'm not sure how long these should be.
