Memories in the Trees

Digital (procreate)

11" x 14"

The story behind this drawing is that this tree-woman is representative of how memories of humanity are stored. I used a crack in the wood through the layers (which can show the tree's experience through winter and summer), and I added wrinkles in the bark. This project relates to my life because I find it interesting how impermanent memories are. Overtime, they become warped. And, this applies to individuals and society as a whole as the world progresses. Additionally, I have had it as a goal for a long time to learn how to do lineart. Although I picked a particularly time-consuming approach, I was surprised by how much time it takes to create neat, intentional lines.

I made this in procreate on my tablet.

I used line and value to create the shape, form, and texture of the character. This started as a simple sketch. After adjusting it, I came up with a texture to create. Then, I added those lines, filled in the background. After that, I added two multiply layers where I emphasised certain pieces of the bark. Finally, I added highlights. From here, I'd like to finish the texture, add her arm and hand, and create a background.
