Mark EngleSession Description

Summarizing and analyzing a story, theme or experience to successfully demonstrate comprehension is essential to student learning. However, just giving students a piece of paper and a pencil, and telling them to summarize can quickly lead to a roomful of groans. There are many different ways to motivate students to effectively summarize and enhance their ability to understand content for learning. Working individually or collaboratively, students can use Web2.0 tools like Blabberize and Voicethread, and programs such as Photostory3 to improve writing and practice these strategies. Students can have a permanent visual component and watch their writing come "alive". These tools will foster creativity and enable students to elaborate on what they have learned through art and animation.

This session is a hands-on session where participants will learn how to incorporate Voicethread, Blabberize and Photostory3 across the curriculum. Participants will see several examples of how students put their knowledge to work. They will then have the opportunity to work collaboratively to summarize what a "Keystone Technology Integrators" role is. They will use one of the tools discussed to create a final product of their written and/or illustrated ideas to share.

Check out our quick video we created... we only had about 45min :P

Teams had to pick one of 4 backgrounds and write a quick skit to perform. They did a great job for the short time frame we had!

These tools allow teachers to differentiate instruction and motivate student learning. They also encompass the state standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. Other standards may also be applied to this session, depending on the story, theme or experience.
