Letter Teen Refugee From TearFund

Teenage girls send messages of love and encouragement to a fellow teenager, living in a refugee camp.

A few weeks ago we told you about a teenage girl called Amira. Amira is, in many ways, a typical teenage girl, interested in pop music, boys and her mobile phone. But she’s also a refugee, having fled Syria and living in a refugee camp in Lebanon.

If you haven’t already, do take a moment to read her story; I’m sure you’ll be touched by it.

The girls from Histon Baptist Church Girls’ Brigade were clearly moved by Amira’s story. They got together and wrote some replies to Amira. ‘If there is any way you can get this to Amira that would be fantastic’ asked the youth minister Chris Farmer the youth worker. ‘We hope it encourages her and those around her in this difficult time.’

Amira; a typical teenager in so many ways

According to Chris, Amira's story struck a chord with the girls; 'They really resonated with her as a young woman and all the desires and hopes that come with that. They readily remembered the aspect of Amira having a lot of jewellery and some of it being from her boyfriend, which she didn't want her Mum finding out about! The girls were moved by the situation and it became personal and real to them.'

The letters have been packed off to the Middle East and will hopefully reach Amira soon. It’s a lovely reminder of how much we have in common with the 100 million refugees and displaced people around the world.
