https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyaEQEmt5ls

Warming-up activity: Ask and answer each other questions in pairs.

- Are you curious about your family history?

- What do you know about your grandparents? How about your great-grandparents?

- Do you have relatives from other nations or countries? Or family living abroad?

- Do you have old photos at home? If yes, are there people in the photos you can't recognize?

Read the introduction:

We asked people from all over the world to take a DNA test. It turns out that the participants have much more in common with other nationalities than they would ever have imagined. Let’s Open Our World is an invitation to travel across boundaries, embrace our differences and open our world.Everybody should be able to travel the world, to meet other people, and experience other cultures and religions. Travel opens our minds: when we experience something different, we begin to see things differently.

Before watching: Match the words and definitions.

After watching: Ask and answer each other questions in groups of four(support your answers, please)

    • Would you take this DNA test? Would you like to get the chance to discover how connected you are to the rest of the world? Why?

    • What nationality would you like to be if you could choose? Why?

    • Where would you like to travel in the future? Give reasons.

    • Would you ever consider hiring a photo detective to tell you more about your family? Why/not?

    • How would you feel if you discovered one of your ancestors was a terrible person? Please explain.

    • Do you think there are too many prejudices and stereotypes when it comes to nationalities?

National stereotypes

A stereotype is "...a fixed, overgeneralized belief about a particular group or class of people.” (Cardwell, 1996). In other words, stereotyping is believing that people of a certain group, race or religion all have the same characteristics when they don't.

Heaven is where the cooks are French,

the police are British,

the mechanics are German,

the lovers are Italian,

and everything is organized by the Swiss.

Hell is where the cooks are British,

the police are German,

the mechanics are French,

the lovers are the Swiss,

And everything is organized by the Italians.
